Weight Loss Boost – Try A Clothes Swap!

August 9, 2011 | By | 128 Replies More

Weight Loss BoostIt’s been a while since I posted last, hasn’t it? Life is just so busy busy busy – even without trying to lose weight! 🙂 I am actually playing with the idea to do a video soon so you will see me live for the first time… let me just get my courage up!

So, here I am, still trying to lose weight the healthy way, and I have not been going so well. I have just updated my weight loss ticker, I am starting over again. Current weight: 80.5kg, goal weight (adjusted from 62kg – yes, I actually do think I have been too dreamy there) 65kg. Last week I was a whopping 82.6 kg on Wednesday morning – whoa! So I actually have lost some weight – 2.1kg in one week. That’s fantastic, don’t you think? Are you wondering how I got that happening? I can tell you exactly how!

Last week on Tuesday night I went to a clothes swap evening at a friends place. Basically what  happens is that everybody brings in their clothes that they don’t wear any more, everything gets thrown on a heap and then everybody can choose and try on what they like and hopefully walk away with a few “new” clothes and a few “old” clothes less. Great concept!

To make a statement, I took most of my clothes that were from my skinnier days: pants, jumpers, t-shirts, etc. It hurt to get rid of them, because I remembered how great I looked in all of them. But then again, I thought, should I actually some day manage to lose the weight, I can also go out and buy a whole new wardrobe that will actually be modern! 🙂

Well, what I did not really think about that evening was that I really am the only one a bit more on the “bigger” side. All my friends are a size 14 or less. I am the only one size 16. So you can guess – all the others had a great time trying on each others (and mine) clothes, pants etc, and I was sitting there not even daring to take off my clothes, I felt so embarrassed. It also was very painful to see my beautiful pants that I treasured so much on other women and looking so good. And realizing that I can’t even get them over my hips any more. So I ended up with (no pants) a few baggy tops, and on top of that I was the one stuffing herself with food feeling defeated, while the others tried on “new” clothes and had a great time.

Result: I weighed in at a whopping 82.6kg the next morning! Mornings, when you really should be at your lowest weight! That was an absolute shocker. And that was my biggest motivation boost yet. I decided there and then that this had to stop. I KNOW I can do it! Damn, I know how good it feels to be thinner, and I CAN DO IT! That’s what I thought. And I went straight back to the diet that has in the past given me the quickest results the easiest way. BodyTrim

Fast Weight LossYes, I am back to BodyTrim. It is by far the best weight loss strategy for me – it concentrates on mainly eating protein, and it gives you a big boost from the start as it lets you lose weight fairly quickly. And as a bonus, you can eat every 2 to 3 hours. When I am on BodyTrim, I am just not hungry at all. And where I went bust the last couple of times (yes I did, otherwise I would be my old svelte self already again, wouldn’t I?), I seem to have it under control now – I just have to think about the clothes swap and I am not getting weak any more! 🙂

I had a total of 2 days off the diet (invited to a Tupperware Party at a friends place who loves to put up great and good amounts of food; invited to a birthday bash on Friday night with heaps of great food) and still managed to lose 2.1kg. I am very proud of myself, and I will keep going!

Updates (hopefully positive ones) to come!

  1. Well done on your weight loss. No matter how small it is, it is still a step in the right direction. I’ll be back to read how your getting on 🙂

  2. I haven’t been through a clothes swap, but I totally empathize with you. I have put on weight over the last two years and I didn’t really realize the extent of it until I tried on some clothes I often wear last year. I was completely floored when the zips of my dress burst. It didn’t just happen to me once, but three times on three different dresses! That motivated me to cut down on sweet drinks and start a running regime!

It’s great that you have lost weight and do keep up the good job. Would love to see you one day posting pics of you in your glorious new wardrobe!

    All the best!

  3. fight for weight loss it so hard, clothes swap is best alternative ways..

  4. Just keep doing what your doing and I’m sure you’ll meet your goal. We all hit road blocks on the way to our goals, but with a little determination we’ll make it! Cheers!

  5. Congratulations on getting back on your diet and losing more weight. I’m sure you will reach your goal weight this time, especially with your motivation being rejuvenated. I myself just recently reached my goal weight and am on the road to maintaining that weight.

I am going to take your lead and look into getting a few pieces of clothing that would still be a tad small and maybe shoot for losing a few more pounds now.

  12. Hi Petra! It’s good that you didn’t lose any hope that you can still lose your weight. Continue to do your daily activities and diet plan. Thanks for sharing this information. I’ve learned a lot.

  13. Continue to think positive. Losing weight is such an easy task wherein you can achieve your dream weight if you have discipline in your self. Take it seriously.

  14. I’m a small businessman in Little Rock and come into contact with many potential customers each day in their homes. In the past 5 years I have gone from 180 lbs to a whopping 235. Finally, I felt the weight of all those pounds and recently went on a diet consisting mainly of veggies and diet drinks. In the last month I’ve lost some 20 lbs and not only feel better physically, but my mental attitude has also improved. As a bonus, I’m able to fit back into some of my old clothes—didn’t toss all of them. The diet has not been easy, when I go to the store my mouth waters as I past by all the old goodies I use to toss in my shopping basket. Oh well, my goal is to reach the 180 again and I will make it.

My starting weight is 70kg and today is my fourth day of trying to lose weight and now I only weigh 67kg! Hehehe I lost 3kg in 4 days. I’m currently browsing through your blog to get some tips if you don’t mind because I know I’m just starting on this weight loss journey and I’m only on my 4th day but maaaaaan I have to admit I’m really craving for many bags of CHEETOS right now ughhhhh this is hard!

I especially enjoyed the little twist of humor in your blog, whether intentional or not it made for great reading.
Im off to put the clothes swap idea to the group, which by the way there are a couple of them using body trim with much success.

  23. Hi Petra,

Have you ever tried ‘juicing’? I’m not talking about the juice fast, or anything extreme. However, my father substitutes one meal a day with a juice mix (apples, carrots, etc) and said it really helped keep the weight off and helped him feel great. So, I started doing it too – I buy organic fruits/veggies to make the juice each day and substitute just one meal. That, combined with some exercise has kept me about 10-15 pounds under my ‘normal’ weight for a couple of months now. Maybe not for everyone but thought I’d mention it….best of luck moving forward with your journey!

  24. It’s not reasonable to weigh yourself everyday. It’s a recipe for disaster. just continue to exercise and eat healthy. Check how your clothes fit and see any improvements.

  52. That’s a bummer, but it’s always best not to compare ourselves to others but to our own self and goals. Good luck!

  53. Surprising to see how small things like clothes can create awareness to reduce weight. I had once seen a movie in which removing and putting on a jacket made that person learn kung-fu. Its not the hard work, but the determination needed to reduce weight and i think you have found yours.

  54. Nice job… see it goes to show you, you don’t have to be so hard on yourself as far as following the rules perfectly; it’s not the end of the world if you take a break every once in awhile and eat something that’s not so great, and you will still lose weight!

I congratulate you for what you’ve achieved so far, and I wish you lots of success with your weight loss plan for the future. From my own experience I can give you a tip that worked for me. I think it is important that your diet is not making you suffer, so if you are used to snacks, don’t leave them out, just make them healthier. I threw in a delicacy weekend each month, when I, for example, ordered beluga caviar from http://www.1caviar.com which is not full of calories, but it IS rich in nutrients and essential fatty acids and minerals, so it is good for you, and you won’t feel you can’t eat anything because you’re on a diet. I hope this will cheer you up and help you in the process! Bye!

  57. Laura says:

Something similar happened to me. I suggested a clothes swap from work and brought my “skinnier” clothes that don’t fit anymore. I was devastated when I saw my friends looking great while I was stuck with a few loose things. Honestly I felt cheated. You didn’t mention this but how was the quality of the clothes? I only brought things that were in great condition. Others brought less than nice garments while another one didn’t bring anything at all.
Laura´s last blog post ..When Refusing Medical Treatment Pays Off

    • Petra Weiss says:

The quality of the clothes was still very good, in general. I think a clothes swap is not to get rid of your really old and ratty things, but to “trade in” the clothes that are still good but you just don’t like them any more, or – like us – you simply can’t wear any more.

  58. Swapping clothes has been a great motivator for me to lose weight. My best friend and I have been racing to see who can lose the most using the 17 day diet, and so far I have seen some great progress. Hopefully it will not be a temporary thing and I will be able to keep the pounds off. Thanks for the inspiration,

I’ve read your previous post (the 11 tips for healthy weight loss) and noticed you did not include exercise in it. Not to impose, but I think that’s what’s missing in your tips.

Also, I’d like to share a tip that I’ve practiced for months already and it’s really effective. It’s called the 6-o’clock diet. What you’re going to do is if it’s already past 6 PM, you won’t have to eat dinner.

Good luck on your weight loss plans, as well. Try every option there is and you might just find the right one for you.

  60. Losing weight is a challenge and can be very difficult. It’s very important to stay motivated during this process and writing in my weight loss journal helps me with that. Losing weight becomes much easier, and more fun this way.

Hi, i just want to share my experience to you. I was 85 kilos before but here i am now im just around 57kgs. What i did is a diet, a diet that i have learned from my sister. She called it “after 6 diet”. It means that after 6 o’clock in the evening you shouldn’t eat anything anymore after you eat your main dinner. It is very effective and there is nothing wrong with trying isn’t it?

    • Petra Weiss says:

I’ve actually heard about that too, just find it extremely hard to stick to. I am sure it works very well. But also, other healthy eating plans suggest you should eat every few hours, even until you go to bed, to keep your metabolism up and firing.

You should be happy for such a surprising and a great kick start. Good to hear that you have lost good amount of weight in one week. We expect you to loose further and come back to 62. I am sure you will do it.

  72. I wish even we had such good concepts followed in our city. I like to try new clothes and I even like shopping as I follow the trend. But now a day’s clothes have become so expensive that buying them is like emptying your pocket at the start of the month itself. So I think in order to keep changing your wardrobe, I think coming up with such events of exchanging clothes with each other would be a good option.

  73. I wish even I was invited in the clothes swap event. I would have enjoyed checking and trying out all the clothes. I have lost a good amount of weight and now I am looking forward to loose more. Doesn’t it seem like every time we are trying to lose weight there are always a lot of parties to attend? LOL… keep it up girl! It’s doesn’t matter how many times we fall but how many times we get up.

I find what works for me is to look at the long term goal and not the immediate goal. I recently attended my brothers wedding and I started losing 6 months before. In that time I cheated a lot but it didn’t matter because the days I was good was waaaay more than those days that I wasn’t. I lot 50 pounds total just going from one day at a time focusing on getting better everyday.

    Keep it up!
    You WILL succeed.

  78. Well, losing weight is such a complicated thing especially when you are out of discipline, if you can discipline yourself then you can lose weight.

  80. I think everybody is so energized after reading your blog. Clothes swap is a very good option. But I wish you would have kept all your old clothes for some more time. It would have been fun then, because it’s only then that you would have tried to loose weight. The old clothes would have tried motivating you and then you would have probably lost weight much faster with the intention of wearing those clothes.

    • Petra Weiss says:

Bianca, I have had most of my old clothes for 15 – 20 years, and they haven’t motivated me to lose weight, otherwise I would be thinner, right? So there was no point in holding on to them. I much rather will go out in the future to buy some new fashionable clothes!

  81. What kind of an event is this? Is this something related to an auction where you generally sell off all your old clothes? Or is it only for giving away clothes for free to others who ever like them and in return taking some clothes which you like? Clothes Swap to my knowledge means only exchanging clothes with each other.

    • Petra Weiss says:

David, that’s correct. You simply “swap” clothes, no money involved, and usually just friends!

  82. Remedio says:

I loved the story, congratulations on the progress. Continue your diet, good nutrition is essential for weight loss

  83. Yes it’s now that I am quite motivated In terms of losing weight. Being on a strict diet makes you feel that you are been deprived of food and the food stuffs that you like the most. But this helps you to feel lighter as days pass by. It does not let you increase your weight even if you are not able to exercise regularly. Dieting would then be called as being on a maintenance diet.

  85. Good luck as you get back on your weight loss journey. I know how hard it can be when you stop your diet for a while and then start it back up.

    Just don’t quit!

Eventually you will not care about all the clothes you gave away because you will look great in all your new clothes! You will need a new set of friends to swap with because you’ll be wearing a smaller size than all your current friends.

  87. Some people just only are on a fruit and salad diet and try loosing weight since they find it easy to have a control over the intake of calories through this method. But in reality there are not much fruits that contain such less calories. There are some fruits like mango and bananas which will only make you gain calories instead of loosing weight while being on a diet. So before going on a diet you should always make it a point that you research and then make a diet plan for yourself.

  88. Weight loss program is generally what every girl always wishes to go for. Comparatively you will find more girls opting for a weight loss than men as they are too concerned about their body figure. And I think it’s absolutely right as this will help you to remain healthy and fit forever. Also loosing weight will help you to wear all size clothes and then you could fit into anything.

  89. I am almost fed up of following all such diet programs. I have almost tried all the diet programs but nothing is working well on me. May be I have been following and mixing all the diets till date. May be I should try and stick to only one of them then I think I will be able to see some results on myself.

  90. I have started with my diet from this week. All what I do is have a heavy and healthy breakfast in the morning and then later on as time passes by I ensure that I decrease the quantity of food that I generally have. So now instead of 4 bread slices I have 3. Probably by next week it will come to 2 bread slices. My diet now includes more of salads and green leafy vegetables cooked with less oil.

  91. My mom is suffering from diabetes. Also because of her uneven food habits she is not able to loose weight. We have tried consulting doctors for her weight loss but nothing is supposed to be working well on her. I am fed up of it now. I want her to get well soon and at the same time I even want her to loose weight and stay fit forever. I don’t know how to manage her diabetes and the diet at the same time because diabetic patients are generally supposed to follow different diet plans.

  92. Grains and other whole grain foods are stomach filling and also contain less calories. It would be better to avoid having sweets and chocolates and have whole wheat bread and grains if you feel hungry. Avoiding sugar completely would not be a good option because you may again weight after you stop dieting. Having natural juices will also help you to control the intake of calories when you feel hungry.

  93. For those who are keen on losing weight are supposed to have a control over their diet. Eating on regular intervals is what will be suggested even by the dieticians. Everywhere you go you see the same diet and exercises mentioned that you need to follow. My idea of avoiding hunger is to have husk at least 30 minutes before lunch and dinner. This helps me to stay away from the junk food and follow the diet rigorously.

  94. Pleasant post!!!!!!

See that goes to show that it need not be so hard on yourself about following the rules properly, is not the end of the world if you take a break once in a while and eat something that is not so great, yet lose weight!!!!!!

    Thanks for this post…………..

  95. I would suggest one to eat a lot of fruits and have natural juices. This would help in avoiding a lot of calories which we usually gain. Fruits and juices diet if followed for one continuous week will help you to loose weight faster in comparison to opting for a normal diet. More over exercising will help in loosing weight further.

  96. Yes it is better not to compare ourselves to others, but a difficult – some may say – impossible state of mind to get out of. I hope all goes well for you.

  97. It’s been a long time that I have been unable to follow by diet well. This is because of the unusual timings of my eating. My eating habits are just not good. Also when I am at my work station and doing some important work I really do not even care at times to eat food. I think this is the main reason why I am turning shapeless day by day. It’s high time now! I think I should start going to the gym.

  98. Having the same amount of food everyday will make your body used to it. In fact getting into such habits will increase your obesity. Also when you get used to such diets your body stops responding to weight loss. So it is always good if you have a switch over to your diet in every seven days. This will help you to stay healthy.

  99. I did not believe this myself. I just saw your blog 2 weeks before. I was so inspired by your blog that I took up the challenge for myself and went on a diet in the last week. Now I have lost half inch of my size and also 1lb of my weight. I am so surprised to look at the change. I think I should continue further and should ensure that I get down with some more of my weight.

  100. I am only on fruits and salads for the past two days. I am really inspired after reading your blog and now I am expecting drastic changes in myself. Hope I loose weight fast. I know it is going to take a while for me to loose weight but I just cannot wait to see myself in my old and pretty clothes. Hope I fit into all of them soon.

  101. I used to have a lot of sugar free chocolates and chewing gums whenever I used to feel hungry. Even after buying the expensive sugar free chocolates and chewing gums I could always see my weight increasing. I did not understand the main reason behind it. The moment when my dietician said that these sugar free chocolates also contain some sugar and added flavors which leads to increase of weight to a great extent. I immediately stopped eating them.

  102. I believe that weight loss’ success depends on the person’s motivation and discipline. So as not to be too hurtful when it comes to dieting, try to alter or limit your food in a good pace. Drastic diet change may lead to a suffering health. Plus, dieting could also be as fun as any of your hobbies, if you choose the right type for you. Most of all, be active. You may not be an exercise fanatic, but dancing or swimming as an alternative could do the trick. Good luck!

  103. Yes, starving for weight loss is absolute no-no. You might see some temporary weight loss but later you will put on more weight.Congrats on loosing weight.

If you are serious about weight loss one thing you are going to have to add to a healthy diet is a good exercise program. You really need to burn off some of those calories as well as turn some of that fat to muscle.

  105. I read your article, it is fantastic blog and educational information i am putting in hand these items in facebook twitter and my friend circle. Thanks for the wonderful info.

  106. bhealthy says:

There are many diets for weight loss but the treatment is in your mind. If you haven’t made a commitment in your mind to get the job done you are wasting your time. Of course along with the commitment comes a healthy diet and a good exercise routine.

  107. Glad for you, it’s always nice to wake up to that! I’m curious how often do you weigh in. I used to weigh in once a week same day same time but that drove me crazy, now I do it everyday but the variations in weight drive me crazy too! What strategy works for you?

  108. That is a true fact we stop controlling our body weight there are several ways we can manage tolose 5 pounds weekly. If you do atleast a 5 min walk everyday after dinner . Either outside or inside the room . Do small jogging in the Morning ? Controlling the diets like fatty meals or meals can create Colestrol.

  109. Yeah it takes time and efforts to achieve weight loss results. Nice resourcefull site with lots of information.
