Healthy Weight Loss – Why Do We Keep Eating???

May 9, 2009 | By | 23 Replies More

Have you noticed that all of us who want to lose weight are lapping up any kind of information we can get on (healthy) weight loss, diets, pills and the likes? It is like an addiction in itself – because we are unhappy with the way we look we are always trying to make it better and hope in the next magazine or book or article on weight loss we will find the solution.

I think we should stop kidding ourselves!!!

If you really think about it, I believe that most (if not all) of us know exactly how we can get rid of the extra weight – I mean, c’mon, it’s fairly easy to remember: eat less and healthier, and exercise more!!

Why then can’t we stop looking for the miracle cure that will make our weight loss so much easier and faster? Haven’t we realized by now that the only real way it can happen permanently is by doing simply that: eating healthier, eating less and exercising.

It seems that these are things that are extremely hard, if not impossible, for us to do. We keep caving in to temptation, we tell ourselves that tomorrow we can start again, and suddenly weeks and months have gone by and we still haven’t shed the kilos. How frustrating is that? We are wasting our time!!! And I have to say I am probably one of the worst, I have that scenario every day…I know exactly what to do. I even get through the day pretty good most of the times, eat healthy, eat less…. but then comes the evening and all is blown out the window. It starts with one piece of chocolate and then comes the crash. And – tomorrow is another day!

I would like to know whether any of you have any opinions why it is that we cannot simply start living the healthier lifestyle. Is it really that hard? It seems to be impossible sometimes!

  1. Very interesting thoughts here. I would say that of course it is hard to exercise every day and eat less if you were eating much more in the past. But you know everything is about psychology i think. You must realize that your life is passing on, that time is going very quickly, and if you want to be slim in this life, you must to do it RIGHT NOW. You must realize that you are wasting your single life, you are wasting the priceless thing. And then you have to frighten yourself that you are getting older but not slimmer and that you will not have such a chance in your entire life. You must think about something like an objective in your life and reach it. Good luck to you in this hard process of loosing weight!

@burning calories, your comment made me get goosebumps! You are so absolutely right with what you say. I keep thinking the same thing!

I think one of the big things for me is that it’s just so easy to NOT maintain a healthy lifestyle. It’s just easy to have access to non healthy foods. Fast food places, microwave meals. I think one of the big things for me is that I’m so busy (or THINK i’m so busy) that I don’t think i’ll have enough time to get healthy food ready. A good thing for me is to remember that i need to TAKE time to make a good, healthy meal. Anyway, I don’t know why it is that we can’t STAY healthy but I really hope we can figure something out to stay healthy!

@Plate Rolls, you are touching a very big point here – in our lives of today we have so many “unhealthy” food choices thrown at us that are so much easier to get than freshly prepared, healthy meals, that it can be very hard to resist temptation! I, too, hope to find a way to stay healthy!

  3. Hi just thought i will let you know that i had a issue with your blog appearing blank as well. Might be monkeys in the page.

  4. One of the best things that helped me to stay away from the fatty foods was to pre-make my lunches and to buy everything ahead of time at the store. I try to snack at least five times a day similar to having five small healthy meals each day. This speeds up my metabolism and helps me to stay away from the more junkier foods.

    • Petra Weiss says:

This is actually a very good tactic – I found, too, that if I know ahead what I am going to eat and have it all prepared, it’s easier to stick to it.

  5. Loved the advice and the idea of consistency with flexibility. I try to stick to a basic plan of oatmeal and banana for breakfast, large salad and Lean Cuisine for lunch, fruit in the afternoon as a snack, and homemade veggies soup or protein shake for dinner. This has helped me to get the required servings of fruits and vegetables as well as limited my cooking time. I make a batch of soup at the beginning of the week which saves time and effort. I also have one piece of whole grain bread or roll with dinner if I’m still hungry.

Our obsession with carbs is one of the big problems. I’ve increased my fat intake and dropped carbohydrates way down (no grains), and can tell you that excessive carb intake plays a much bigger role in weight issues than most people think. Fat is your friend! (healthy fats of course).

  7. For me, living a healthy life style really depends on one’s self. Meaning to say, learning to discipline one self is one way to do this. For others this might be hard but having that self-discipline is not that difficult this healthy life style to achieve. Somebody put this in my mind that “too much is dangerous”. I think it’s possible.

  8. Exercise and strict dieting can do magic if you are trying to lose weight. I did a lot of cardio just to lose weight.’,:

  9. I’ve come across the “magic” of coconut recently and let me tell you that it works wonders for weight loss. Don’t let the fact that it’s almost all saturated fat scare you off – the medium chain fatty acids on coconut can but burned as fuel by the body immediately unlike other fat that has to be processed by the liver first. If you are trying to lose weight, start eating coconut you won’t believe how amazing it is!

  10. it is easy to achieve healthy weight by just being conscious with what you eat-*`

    • Petra Weiss says:

Well, Morgan, I disagree. There is so much emotion playing a part, it’s not that easy. Otherwise everybody who wants to be thinner would be!

  11. I just realized that eating within 2 hours before you workout burns those calories and does not tap the fat in the body. I have been stuck at the last 10 lbs for a while regardless of 2 hour workouts.

  12. actually, it is easy to get a healthy weight if people are just careful on what they are eating’:.

  13. maintaining a healthy weight can be tricky because it revolves around genetics and some other factors ;”*

Does anyone else have problems with waking in the night and finding themselves eating in the kitchen, feeling like they are out of control with it?

If so how did you stop? My weight is pilling on and with night time binges is only getting worse.

  15. Stacy M. says:

The EXACT same thing happens to me. I start out the day with diet goals in mind. By evening, I start over eating. I don’t know what to do! I’ve gotten rid of junk food from my house so that I don’t eat it, but it still doesn’t solve the problem.

  16. Frank says:

Nice thought there Petra. Most of the people believe that losing weight is very difficult and it requires a lot of effort because in our society, success is always associated with extreme hard work. In reality, it require smart work more than hard work to see your desired results.

  17. It is really that hard!
At first its easy, but then staying motivated is very difficult.
It’s happened to me over and over again. I gym for like 3-4 months, and then laziness kicks in, i’m busy with other things etc, and then its all over. Starting over also really requires a big push. Its a lot of effort really, so most people don’t bother.
