Healthy Diet Weight Loss – Negative Calorie Foods Help You Lose Weight!

Let’s face it, we all know that to achieve a healthy weight loss we need to burn more calories than what we take in. That is nothing new, and everybody who has ever tried to shed even a few kilos only will have heard of it.

I have come across an astonishing fact in my search for the “perfect way” of losing weight through a healthy diet, though – foods that are called “negative calorie foods“.

It is clear that all food has calories, some food has more, some food less. But do you know also that there are certain types of food that can actually help you lose weight simply by eating them? No matter what their calorie count is, they can still aid in weight loss if you eat them – without you actually dieting and exercising!

These types of food are called “negative calorie foods“, and it is basically food that has a slimming effect on the body. What that means is that “negative calorie food” is a bit harder to digest for the body. When you consume it, your body has to actually work harder and therefore uses up more calories by producing the energy needed to digest this food. This food also increases the metabolic rate of your body naturally. So simply eating these types of food can really help with weight loss!

But “Negative calorie foods” does not mean that these foods do not have any calories, or even have negative calories. All it means that the body needs more energy to digest them than what it gets in energy from these foods. So they create a “loss of energy”. (I hope you understand what I mean!).

What you should obviously not do when eating this food – and unfortunately it is very tempting to do so – is to dress the food up with cheese, or sour cream, dips and butter etc. As soon as you do that, their weight loss effect goes out the window, as you are obviously adding a heap more calories to the equation, so it won’t work. It’s hard not to dip that carrot into the avocado philadelphia dip, but if you want to lose weight – don’t do it!

Are you by now wondering which foods I am talking about? Let’s see, there are, for example, these kinds of fruit: apples, grapefruit, lemons, oranges, mangoes, pineapple, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, tangerines (looks like all the citrus are in here :)) and papaya; or take these kinds of vegetables: green cabbage, beetroot, asparagus, carrots, cucumbers, garden cress, garlic, lettuce, onion, zucchini, turnips, spinach, radishes and green beans, and many more.

Happy veggie and fruit eating!!!

  2. There has been some argument with experts about whether negative calorie foods actually exist and work as claimed. I guess that because the foods on the list are healthy choices it certainly can’t hurt to eat more of them regardless. It is proven that building muscle does help to raise the metabolism and burn more fat and weight training can be a great way to improve muscle tone and amount. It doesn’t mean we all have to look like a body builder, but most people can benefit from toning up and having less fat on their body.

  3. I heard that lettuce was a negative calorie food years ago, but I thought that it was the only one.
The type of food you eat is really important… I like to think that good health doesn’t just start with good eating, it starts before that, with good shopping. Try giving up sugar! Mae – Air purifiers online.

Thanks for the post Petra. All the foods rich in fiber and also the ones rich in protein can be categorized as negative calorie foods because our body takes some time to digest them and burn a lot of calories in the process as well.
