Are you guilty of skipping breakfast because you are too busy, or you think this is the time when you can still control your appetite? Well, you have probably heard it before, but YOU SHOULDN’T! A healthy breakfast is one of the key elements of a healthy diet and consequential weight loss.
The thing is, when you don’t eat breakfast, your body sort of thinks “ah – no food – I better hang on to what I have in store, because it looks like I am not getting any more. Better not burn so much either, or I will be losing it quicker!”. And you know what that means: Your metabolism starts slowing down (your body is not burning so much energy any more to conserve it).
So instead of losing weight (what you really hope to achieve by skipping breakfast), you are actually creating a platform for weight gain. Your body will be starting the day kind of sluggish, and by lunch time you will usually be so hungry that you make more than up for the missed breakfast.
When you are trying to manage your weight, it is really important not to miss breakfast. There are plenty of studies that have revealed that people who eat a sensible breakfast every day are a lot more likely to be in a healthy weight range than those who skip it.
3 reasons why you should keep breakfast on the menu:
- Eating a healthy breakfast (preferably low GI, like porridge etc.) can really kick start your metabolism in the morning.
- When you eat breakfast in the morning, you are more likely to have a lower intake of fat but highter intakes of fibre and many other vitamins and minerals.
- Eating breakfast in the morning will help you make better food choices during the day, as you won’t be ravenous for unhealthy snacks.
Also important is to eat your breakfast conscientious and slow. Sit down at a table and concentrate only on your breakfast. Nothing else. No reading, TV or anything. You should feel yourself feel hungry a lot quicker because you are more in tune with your body and listening to it.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Hello,
Thanks so much for this post.Losing weight can be so difficult.
I’ve really enjoyed your blog. I’ll definitely pop in again:)Brenton Faulkner
This is a top notch article and it’s true. A lot of people still don’t know that the best way to rev up your metabolism and lose weight, is to eat 5-6 small meals each day. Dieting by starving yourself or cutting back on meals is counter productive at best. It’s also not sustainable as a long term lifestyle.
If you want to lose some weight, then eat smart and eat 5-6 times per day. If you want to lose weight AND keep it off, eat smart AND combine it with a weight training program. Weight training will rev up your metabolism another notch and help you lose weight even when you’re watching TV or sleeping.
